2018-06-05

Is it common to have this doubt?

Much is talked about and questioned about the difference in Interior design and architecture but it is often difficult to explain why these two areas are so confused because many of the professionals work on both. This doubt is very common, and do not worry we will try to help you.

First of all, we have to clarify that although there are professionals who can practice these two professions in parallel, these two areas have different requirements, different responsibilities and different approaches.

Let's start with architecture.

Architect / Architecture

The architect or architecture is considered an art of organizing the space according to three pillars: Beauty, construction and functionality. This artistic component involves technical knowledge, constructive knowledge (due to constructive materials and techniques), human techniques (in order to respond to users' expectations) and finally a local dimension (adaptation to the space that the work inserts). When it comes too often to architectural courses, it is normal that many of the subjects are common to those of interior design courses. And a lot of the time here comes the confusion with the area of interior design.

What we should point out is that the architecture course is more comprehensive, it aims to train professionals to design commercial or residential spaces such as single dwellings, single-family homes, buildings, offices, public spaces (urbanism) and more, and are still able to regulate the works (work follow-up) or even coordinate the specialty project such as structures, hydraulics, electricity, thermal and / or acoustic projects together with other areas.

Interior design is seen as the visual art of composing interior environments such as residences, apartments, offices, restaurants, hotels, commercial buildings. You can also see (in more detail) an article that addresses the work of interior design. Also with some architectural components in its academic course, the interior designer directs all its focus on the composition of the interior spaces / environments, following a set of techniques of ergonomics, acoustics, beauty and luminosity.

Most Common Differences

In summary, we will then present the main differences:

Environment and performance

Environment and performance – This is the main difference we talked about in previous lines, the architect and the interior designer, have some common disciplines throughout their academic journey. However, the architectural course is much more comprehensive.

Academic course

Academic course –
As a second difference, we point out the operating environment. If you think the main focus of architecture is an exterior part of the work that refers to the construction while the interior designer enters a phase later than the construction where you can already insert in the design of the space. It is very important that both professions reconcile from a certain phase of the project because they will surely add more value to the final work.

Contact with other professional areas

Contact with other professional areas  –  Last difference is that many times an interior designer needs to be in particular contact with painters, carpenters and architects since the architect himself may be in permanent contact with engineers, civil builders, contractors and also interior designer.
